WhatsApp Green Tick Verification: The 2026 Guide

The WhatsApp green tick isn't a paid upgrade — it's earned. Meta approves only ~40% of applications, mostly because merchants submit weak press coverage. Here's what actually works.

Every second week someone asks me some version of: "how do I get that green tick on WhatsApp?" Usually followed by: "I\'ll pay whatever Meta charges." Here\'s the thing — you can\'t pay for it. The green tick (officially the "Official Business Account" badge) is earned, not bought. And out of about 40 client applications I\'ve been involved with, roughly 24 got rejected on the first try. Almost always for the same reason.

The one reason is weak press coverage. Meta\'s reviewer opens the URLs you submit and decides if your brand is "notable" — in their words. They\'re strict about what counts. This guide walks through exactly what Meta accepts, what they silently reject, and how to actually get approved (including the one tip that has doubled approval rates for my merchants).

5 requirements before you apply

Business Verification completed

Meta Business Portfolio → Verified status. Without this, green tick is auto-rejected.

WhatsApp Business API (Cloud or On-Premises)

Green tick is only available for API accounts, not WhatsApp Business app.

Notable brand / press coverage

This is the killer. Meta wants proof your brand is covered by third-party media. Wikipedia page, coverage in Forbes/TechCrunch/ET/Mint/YourStory, or verified presence on Meta's partner lists.

Phone number on WABA

Must be actively messaging and not flagged. Tier 1 or Tier 2 messaging limit preferred.

High-quality messaging history

Green or yellow quality rating, low block rate, no recent violations.

Press coverage: what Meta accepts vs rejects

This is where 9 out of 10 rejections come from. Meta\'s reviewer checks every link you submit. Here\'s what actually works.

Accepted

  • Wikipedia article about the brand or founder (hardest, strongest signal)
  • Editorial feature in ET, Mint, The Hindu Business Line, Livemint, YourStory, Inc42, Entrepreneur India
  • Forbes / TechCrunch / BBC / Reuters feature
  • Case study by Shopify / Meta themselves (published on shopify.com/blog or developers.facebook.com)
  • Government / industry-body recognition (DPIIT Startup India, NASSCOM 10K, etc.)
  • Interview or podcast feature on a well-known business show

Rejected

  • Your own blog posts
  • Press releases on PR distribution sites (PR Newswire, PRLog)
  • Directory listings (Crunchbase, Justdial, IndiaMart)
  • Self-submitted LinkedIn/Medium articles
  • Shopify App Store listing (your own)
  • Reviews on G2, Capterra (unless editorial, not review)

The submission flow (step-by-step)

  1. Go to Meta Business Manager.
  2. Open WhatsApp Manager (left sidebar).
  3. Go to Settings → Account Tools → Phone numbers.
  4. Select your verified phone number.
  5. Click "Official Business Account" → Request.
  6. In the form: select your business vertical, add 3–5 URLs of press coverage (best ones first — reviewer reads top-down), paste supporting text (why you deserve verification — keep it 3–4 sentences).
  7. Submit and wait 7–30 days. You\'ll get an email either way.

Pro tip: reviewer reads top-down

Put your strongest press link first. If your #1 link is a Forbes feature and #2 is a YourStory piece, lead with Forbes. Meta\'s reviewer sometimes approves without reading past the first 2 links — so don\'t bury the lead.

Common rejection reasons (in order of frequency)

1. Weak press coverage (60% of rejections)

Self-published content, press release distribution sites, or blog mentions don\'t count. Meta wants editorial coverage from known publications.

2. Business Portfolio not verified (20%)

Business Verification is a prerequisite. Complete it first — it takes 1–3 days with proper docs (GST, PAN, incorporation certificate).

3. Low messaging volume (10%)

If your WABA has only sent a few hundred messages and has no quality rating, Meta may defer approval. Run at least 30 days of active messaging first.

4. Misaligned business vertical (5%)

If your Shopify store sells skincare but your Business Portfolio category is "Software", Meta flags the mismatch.

5. Policy violations on WABA (5%)

Recent block-rate spikes, template rejections, or messaging policy warnings auto-disqualify. Wait 30 days, clean up, reapply.

Green tick is not required to send WhatsApp

Many merchants obsess over green tick. You don\'t need it to send order confirmations, shipping updates, or marketing. It\'s purely a trust badge. Focus on getting WhatsApp Business API live first via our Meta Cloud API setup guide, then apply for green tick 3–6 months in once you have press coverage.

FAQs

Is the WhatsApp green tick free?

Yes. Meta doesn't charge for green tick — unlike Meta Verified on Instagram/Facebook. It's granted based on merit, and the application is submitted from Meta Business Manager under the WhatsApp Manager → Settings → Phone numbers → Request verification.

How long does green tick approval take?

Typically 7–30 days. Some applications are reviewed in under a week. Expect 2–4 weeks if your brand isn't globally famous. Meta's review is manual and involves human review of your press coverage.

What's the rejection rate?

Meta doesn't publish numbers. From what we've seen across ~40 client applications, roughly 60% are rejected on first attempt — almost always for insufficient press coverage.

Can I reapply after rejection?

Yes, but wait at least 30 days and add stronger coverage. Reapplying immediately with the same evidence gets auto-rejected.

Do I need the green tick to send WhatsApp notifications?

No. You can send 100% of the same notifications (order confirmations, shipping, cart recovery, marketing) without green tick. Green tick is purely a trust badge — it shows customers you're verified by Meta. It also unlocks higher messaging tiers and removes the "business name in brackets" display.

Does green tick affect messaging limits?

Indirectly. Green tick businesses often get escalated to Tier 3 (1M unique users/day) or Tier 4 (unlimited) faster, because Meta treats them as lower-risk. But you can hit Tier 3 without green tick by maintaining green quality rating and good delivery volumes.

What if I don't have press coverage yet?

Focus on getting it first. Pitch YourStory, Inc42, The Ken, Entrepreneur India with a specific story angle (growth milestone, unique approach, customer impact). Paid PR placements are a grey area — Meta can often detect sponsored content. Better: contribute to publications, get your founder quoted, appear on a podcast.

Can Alintro help me get green tick?

We help you prepare the application: checking your WABA readiness, reviewing your press coverage, and formatting the submission. But we can't manufacture media coverage for you — that's organic PR work. If your brand has the coverage, we'll walk you through the submission flow and usually improve the approval odds by 20–30%.

Get WhatsApp Business API live first

Green tick is a bonus — WABA is the foundation. Alintro\'s Meta Cloud API setup is the fastest path: most stores are live in under 2 hours.
