Best SMS Gateway for Shopify in India (2026)

If you're running a Shopify store in India, SMS is still the single best channel for order confirmations, COD verification, and shipping updates. The question everyone asks: which gateway do I pick?

We've wired 14 Indian SMS gateways into a production Shopify store over the past year. Here's the summary: there is no "best", but there are four or five you should actually consider. The rest are priced similar, feel worse, or have a worse DLT workflow.

What "best" actually means

Five factors matter more than the headline rate:

1. DLT registration workflow. Is the principal entity + template approval self-service? MSG91 and Gupshup nail this. Smaller providers force manual email approval.
2. Transactional vs promotional routing. If your Shopify order confirmations get mis-routed as promotional, they go to the DND graveyard. Pick a provider with a clear transactional header.
3. Retry + delivery callback. You want a webhook when an SMS fails so you can re-route to WhatsApp or email.
4. Effective price = base + DLT fee + fee per delivered + per failed. Some providers bill failed sends. Read the T&C.
5. Support response time. When a template gets stuck in approval for 4 days, support matters.

The short answer

• Best for most Shopify stores: MSG91. Cheapest usable price, self-serve DLT, dead-simple API, reliable.
• Best for WhatsApp + SMS combined: Gupshup. One vendor for both, good DLT, solid BSP for WhatsApp.
• Best for enterprise scale: Kaleyra or Route Mobile. Higher price, white-glove onboarding, dedicated IP routing.
• Best for fast setup, low volume: Fast2SMS. No paperwork, pre-paid credits, works in 10 minutes.
• Avoid: Twilio for India-only traffic. 8-10× the cost of a local provider with no deliverability advantage.

DLT compliance — the non-negotiable

Every commercial SMS to an Indian number must be scrubbed against DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) platforms. You need:

• A Principal Entity (PE) ID — register your business on one of the operators' DLT portals (Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, or BSNL).
• A Header / Sender ID — typically your brand abbreviation, 6 characters.
• Template IDs — every unique SMS body must be pre-registered. Variable parts go inside {#var#}.
